Listed below are just a few of my favorite books, movies, TV series, and whatnot, in no particular order, not necessarily exhaustive.

Books

  • The Seventh Sword trilogy, by Dave Duncan
    1. The Reluctant Swordsman
    2. The Coming of Wisdom
    3. The Destiny of the Sword
  • The RiddleMaster of Hed trilogy, by Patricia McKillip
    1. The Riddle-Master of Hed
    2. Heir of Sea and Fire
    3. Harpist in the Wind
  • The Thread that Binds the Bones, by Nina Kiriki Hoffman
  • Summon the Keeper, by Tanya Huff
  • The Misenchanted Sword, by Lawrence Watt-Evans. Actually just about anything by him is good. He often writes about people who do not seek power or greatness, but have it come to them through some combination of circumstances, a favorite theme of mine.
  • The Knight of the Word series, by Terry Brooks
    1. Running with the Demon
    2. Knight of the Word
    3. Angel Fire East
  • The Miles Vorkosigan series, by Lois McMaster Bujold, especially the last four books.
  • The Chalion series, by Lois McMaster Bujold
  • The Final Reflection, by John M. Ford. A Star Trek novel about the Klingons.
  • The Yurt series, by C. Dale Brittain. Most fantasy novels I've read have priests and wizards as enemies. In these books they are the best of friends.
    1. A Bad Spell in Yurt
    2. Mage Quest
    3. The Wood Nymph and the Cranky Saint
    4. The Witch and the Cathedral
    5. Daughter of Magic
    6. Is this Apocalypse Necessary?
